Blog #5 Texas State and Local Government

Even though Texas is mostly conservatives and has some of the top universities in the United States, it still has lots of uneducated and lots of liberal citizens. Recently, we have had an increasing amount of drama on the steps of our state capital. In the capital city especially, there are a plethora of people that overreact and believe that their first speculations are the facts. Due to these people, that don’t take the time to investigate the rumors and because of the help of the media, things get out of control and people get misinformed.

Don’t get me wrong, I like for people to voice their opinion, especially if they feel that there is something bothering them. However, I feel that if they are going to voice their opinion, they should take the time to do a little research and not assume that because the clouds are dark, that it is going to rain.

Texas state and local governments are being affected by the medial coverage of protesters rather than the bill itself. Lots of the important news never makes it to the air and the majority of the citizens never known what’s really going on with their petitions that they send to the capital.

I am worried the new generation of Texas citizens, which are going to be running our government in the near future, are not going to know how to make legitimate arguments, but rather act on impulse, making them less effective leaders.

A recent example of protesters fueling other protesters was the protests against the abortion bill. A lot of citizens disagreed with what they heard about the bill and went to protest, what they were protesting which was not even what the bill was about was heard by others who joined in on the protest. Rather than reading the signs of protesters, people should have done a little research of their own and found out what the bill was really about before joining the protest, that way they had hard evidence of what they were protesting. Too many people are spreading misinformed information and it needs to stop so we can move bills through our governments more efficiently.

Ted Cruz Against Immigration Reform Blog 4

According to an article written by Ben Sherman, published on the Burn Orange Report, Ted Cruz Attends Immigration Rally Hosted by Proud Racist, Ted Cruz is railed against the immigration reform. Ted Cruz is going from state to state talking to people face to face trying to get his name out there as he is seeking the republican votes in the primaries to be able to run for president. It is not a surprise that Cruz is against immigration reform as he is a member of the Republican Party. The Republican Party is mostly white Anglos with a majority of strong conservatives. If he wants to win next year’s presidential elections he might need to consider changing his point of view towards immigrants.

There was a very offensive quote from the crow that compares immigrants to donkeys’ DNA and Americans to race horses’ DNA. These comparisons get immigrants or supporters of the immigration reform to not support this candidate. Ted Cruz might not be the one who said that comparison but if he keeps getting involved and going to events that comfort racism, he will not have a good chance of becoming the future president of the United States.

The author of this article is trying to target white Anglo Republicans who do not support the immigration reform because they only see some of the great founders of America like Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, John Smith, etc., but not the immigrants of today who are reconstructing this country out of the recession. Because this article uses quotes from the crow, it is a very credible argument causing Ted Cruz to lose support.

This article is poorly written, as it only talks about one “opps” moment of Ted Cruz. However, it is a good report since it helps the citizens to be informed and allows them to make a decision as to whom they may want to vote for. Immigrants are not donkeys; they just have different morals. I support immigration reform because this country was built by immigrants and because nobody with a high income wants to clean their own toilet and mow their own grass on Sunday afternoon.

Zimmerman Verdict Blog 3

           According to an article written by Edward Garris, published on the burnt orange report, Jackson Lee React to Zimmerman Verdict, the NBA (National Bar Association) is talking about the injustice of the decision the judge took on the verdict of George Zimmerman in the killing of Trayvon Martin. The NBA is the nation’s oldest and largest association of African American Lawyers and Judges. Due to the majority of them being African American, they are not content with Zimmerman’s verdict of not guilty. They are trying to quote it back to the great Martin Luther King Jr. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” They think that because they are judges and lawyers, they are qualified to make people believe the verdict was wrong.

            If Zimmerman where to be full blooded Hispanic, this case would not be a big deal, no one would of taken this case seriously and made it go viral. The worst thing is that if Trayvon Martin were white nobody would even care. Almost at the same time that Martin died there was a young white kid, his name was Marley Lions, he was shot five times by a black male while unarmed. The news about Marley Lions, barely made the local news and now we are making a big deal when its clearly stated that Martin made the first move. Zimmerman was trialed under the Stand Your Ground Law, which states that if you fear for your life you can take action to defend yourself.

The author of this article is targeting a majority of African American communities, especially lawyers and judges, as he is using the reactions of the NBA to help and gather these people to collectively address the affront to and devaluing of civil rights of everyone regardless of race who have been unfairly served by the justice system. Due to the fact that the NBA is composed of lawyers and judges, they use valid arguments and good points, like if Zimmerman would not have been carrying a gun, he would not have followed and attacked Martin.

            This article is well written, as it only uses credible information from one side of the coin, and the author also connects the case to the injustice that used to happen decades ago strengthening it further. However, if you know what is happening on the other side of the coin, you understand the case differently. I don’t agree with this argument and I believe that the jury’s verdict was right.

Blog 2

On Tuesday, July 9, 2013, Texas Monthly published an article announcing the future of Governor Rick Perry, as he will not be running for re-election in 2014. Rick Perry has been the longest running governor in Texas history since 2000.  According to Texas Monthly, Rick Perry has exhausted all of his political power, as he cannot shake down the lobby any more. He has lost votes among the republican voters in recent surveys. As governor Perry’s announced that he would not run for governor, he fails to mentioned anything about his future plans.

The big questions are, what is Rick Perry’s future? And what is he going to run for if he is not going to run for governor? If he decides to run for president again he will be faced with a lot of obstacles. Even though Rick Perry was fortunate to govern Texas in a period that the state experience an economical growth and lower numbers of unemployed citizens than the national average, there are lots of things that governor Perry did in his career as a governor that will be the make it or brake it, decision when some decide to vote for him in the future for whatever he runs for. What ever the future brings to the famous Governor Rick Perry, citizens of Texas and the country will have their eyes upon him.

I recommend reading this article, as it is important for us as citizens to be able to be informed of why and what will be the future of future former governor as this may affect us.
